Value to WA's Economy

The mineral and petroleum sectors continue to remain the pillar of the State’s economy rising by 23 per cent to reach $48.4 billion in 2006. This follows a decade of average annual growth of more than 10 per cent. The record result was driven by strong overseas demand for Western Australia’s (WA) resources and rising commodity prices.

The two sectors account for around 30 per cent of Gross State Product, 88 per cent of WA's export income and around 20 per cent of the State’s employment.

Whilst most of the State’s minerals and energy industries recorded higher sales quantities, the overall rise in value of sales for 2006 is mainly attributed to high commodity prices.
