Regional Minerals Program

The Regional Minerals Program (RMP) was established by the Australian Government in 1996 and the last projects were approved in 2003.

The Regional Minerals Program (RMP) projects seek to reduce costs to the mining and minerals industry by:

  • Reducing impediments
  • Streamlining approval processes
  • Encouraging further mining, exploration, investment and value added processing activities
  • Generating income earlier than may otherwise be expected

Since 1996, eight RMP projects were undertaken in Western Australia, including:

  • Central Pilbara Infrastructure Planning Study
  • Developing the West Kimberley's Resources
  • East Kimberley - East Tanami Regional Minerals Study
  • Energy for Minerals Development in the South West Coast Region
  • Mid West Regional Minerals Study
  • Pilbara Coast Petroleum and Minerals Study
  • Southern Cross-Esperance Regional Minerals Study
  • Water and the Western Australian minerals and energy industry: Certainty of supply for future growth

The RMP projects have produced key outcomes that include a clearer understanding of the impediments and opportunities for development of the mining and minerals processing industries in the selected regions, and the prioritisation of key infrastructure projects to encourage development.
