TENGRAPH® to Google Maps
A new version of the TENGRAPH® Online system has been released with a very handy tool. Selecting a position on the TENGRAPH® display will open up Google Maps based on the same position displaying aerial photography.
How to open Google maps directly from TENGRAPH®
- Load a TENGRAPH® electronic map as usual from one of the Enquiry options.
- Zoom in to an area of interest.
- Select Coordinates… from under the Window menu heading.
- Within the Coordinates dialog make sure “Nearest point details” or “At mouse position” radio button is active.
- Select a point of interest on the TENGRAPH display with the mouse and then select the Google Map button.
- Within a few seconds (depending on the speed of your Internet connection) a Google Map window will open centred on the same Latitude and Longitude coordinates selected in TENGRAPH®.
- The point selected in TENGRAPH® is represented in Google Maps with an “
“ icon - You can now use the functionality provided by Google Maps.
- Selecting another position within the TENGRAPH® display and pressing the Google Maps button will open a new Google Maps window based on the new position.
Note: Google Maps is initially displayed at a scale of approximately 1:10,000.

Aboriginal Heritage Surveys Now Displayed in TENGRAPH®
In collaboration with the Department of Indigenous Affairs (DIA), the Department of Industry and Resources (DoIR) is now displaying, in its TENGRAPH® database, all existing digitally captured heritage surveys that have previously been lodged with DIA. This will be a boost to Industry and the Indigenous Community as it will raise awareness of Aboriginal heritage and, in parallel, assist mining applicants of where surveys have been carried out previously and provide a guide to Industry before applying for titles. As new surveys are lodged this database will act as a valuable tool for Industry and the Indigenous Communities/ Agencies in raising awareness and protecting Aboriginal culture. For more, refer to the document above right.
Print High Quality TENGRAPH® PDF Maps
The PDFs are automatically generated and a link to them is sent to your registered email address. You then have the option of saving them to your PC or printing them to your local printer. To ensure that you have provided DoIR with a current email address please up-date your contact details. To view PDF files you will require Adobe Reader available for download here. NOTE: The quality of TENGRAPH® PDF prints may differ to the image drawn on your monitor.
Create Graticular Polygon
This feature allows TENGRAPH® users to quickly create a polygon(s) based on graticules. This useful tool may be used in the preparation of exploration licence applications and partial surrenders. The functionality is accessed in TENGRAPH® by selecting Enhanced Plot from the main Process menu. Refer to the document on the right for instructions on how to create a graticular polygon in TENGRAPH®.
View mining tenement boundaries using Google Earth
Have you ever used Google Earth? If you have Google Earth installed on your PC you can now view TENGRAPH® mining tenement information. A successful outcome of the departments Spatial Data Infrastructure Project (SDIP) has made TENGRAPH® data more accessible. Tenement data can be downloaded in KML/KMZ, a format used by Google Earth from DoIR’s new 'Data and Software Centre'. There are other data sets available from this site that can be used in Google Earth and other Geographic Information Systems.
How to view live and pending tenement information in Google Earth
Step 1 - Open the Department’s Data and Software Centre Internet page.
Step 2 - From the Data and Software Centre expand the Mineral information heading and select the 'Download' link for 'Current Tenements (Live and Pending)'.
Step 3 - Select the 'Google Earth KML/KMZ file' link to download tenements for use in Google Earth. You will then be asked to agree to the terms and conditions of use before you can proceed.
Step 4 - Run or Save the 'tenements_kml.exe' file to your PC.
Step 5 - Run the WinZip Self Extraction Program by pressing the Unzip button. Note the name of the folder that the unzipped file is saved to. (You can use the Browse function to save the “tenements.kmz” file to a folder of your choice.)
Step 6 - Navigate to the unzipped 'tenements.kmz' file on your PC and open it by double clicking on it.
Step 7 - Google Earth will open and fly you to Western Australia where you can view tenement boundaries over aerial photography or satellite imagery. Depending on the speed of your Internet connection it may take several minutes before you can start using Google Earth.
Google Earth has many useful functions to try out. Once you have mastered them you will be able to:
- Search for tenements.
- Switch tenements labels on or off.
- Display tenement holder and other tenement information.
- Edit the tenement properties to tailor the colour fill and transparency.
- Select colours for individual tenements.
- Create and save your own polygons over areas of interest.
The Google Earth mining tenement file available for down load is up-dated every night. For up-to-date tenement information please use the TENGRAPH® system or contact the regional mining registrar’s office. It is possible to run TENGRAPH® on-line and Google Earth systems simultaneously, though this works best if you have fast internet access and two monitors attached to your PC.
