Occupational Groups

Occupational groupings within the Department of Industry and Resources (DoIR) comprise a variety of professional, technical and administrative roles and the major ones are outlined here.

There is also a broad range of other occupations within DoIR that have not been included.

For example, the Corporate Support Division employs administrative and professional staff in Human Resources, Finance, Records, Facilities and Services, Occupational Health and Information Services.

Cartographers

The Department of Industry and Resources employs approximately 72 cartographers in the Perth and Kalgoorlie offices, and in the Geological Survey of Western Australia, land access, titles and petroleum areas.

Cartographers are involved in the acquisition, manipulation, analysis and presentation (communication) of spatial data using a number of geographic and mapping information systems.

Cartographers produce web-mapping applications, database products, high-quality maps, figures, posters and interactive CDs.

Cartographers provide legal examination of tenement surveys as well as employing their skills in GIS, graphic design and editing, spatial data management and digital and remote sensing.
Salary Level and Qualifications

Cartographic Officers are classified from Level 2 to Level 5.

The minimum qualification requirement is a Certificate in Cartography.

Communications and Marketing Officers

Communications, Protocol and Marketing Officers within the Investment Services and the Comunications and Marketing areas are responsible for the direct promotion of investment opportunities to potential investors and industry advocates, through publications, sales, industry visits and conferences.

Communications Officers employed within the External Affairs section of the Communications and Marketing Division are involved in implementing internal and external communications strategies and programs on behalf of the Department.
Salary Level

Communications Officers are classified from Level 2 to Level 5.
Qualifications

A tertiary qualification in a related subject (or considerable media and public relations experience) is essential for appointment at Level 5.
